From: Arthur O. Yamada, Ph.D. Date: September 19, 2003 Subject: LitigationWe wish to advise that the proceeding against Honolulu University (HU) by the State of Hawaii was not the result of any inaction or misstatement by Honolulu University. Shermont Business Academy, who was not an authorized agent of Honolulu University, had failed to include the disclosure by law that "HU is not accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by the United States Secretary of Education" on Shermont's website last year. This nondisclosure was the initial concern of the complaint and Honolulu University was not involved. Nonetheless, the State of Hawaii has settled the matter against Honolulu University and the case is closed. In light of this matter, several press media have highlighted this litigation through uninformed sources and possibly, through no fault of the media, that the published translation from English to Chinese of the litigation had created an impression that HU is no longer in operation as a result of the judgment. This misapprehension caused the media to publish misleading articles about Honolulu University, which was also corrected by the State of Hawaii. HU has always abided to the law and order of the country with full respect for the same. This negative impact has caused undue concern to the public, especially those who have placed their trust in Honolulu University, China. We hereby assure all concerned, especially our students, that HU is still and will continue to be, in operation and will strive to provide quality education through distance learning. All our representative offices are specifically directed to observe the code of conduct and ethics in servicing of the general public and our students. Thank you for your concern and thank you for your best wishes for the best interest of Honolulu University. |
